When a person entertains, not only is the food important to the guests, but the presentation is equally important. Decorating the table with a simple traditional vase of flowers is attractive, but using craft ideas to be a little less traditional can be much more impressive to your guests. The appearance of the table sets the theme for the meal and being able to craft interesting table decorations can be fulfilling for the designer. Does this Spark an idea?
Designing a Centerpiece
A centerpiece may start with an eight-inch grapevine wreath. Hot-glue seasonal silk flowers to the top of the wreath and use silk leaves to fill in the bare areas between the flowers. Lay the wreath flat in the center of the table with the flowers side up. Place a tall glass cylindrical vase in the center of the wreath. Fill the vase 1/3 full of polished river pebbles available at your craft store. Fill the vase with water. Add a full bunch of seasonal flowers to the vase so that they form a low mound just above the top of the vase. Add several tall crooked twigs to the vase so that they emerge from the center of the flowers. Hot glue small flowers on the twigs in a random design. Branches of forsythia or pussywillows would work well for a spring arrangement.
Extending the Centerpiece
Decorate two four-inch wreaths with small silk flowers and leaves as described in Section 1 with the large wreath. Adhere them with hot glue. Place one small wreath at each end of the large wreath to make a longer centerpiece on your table. Set a 1/8-inch tall clear glass cylindrical vase in the center of each of the two small wreaths. Fill each vase 1/3 full with polished river pebbles from your craft store. Fill each vase with water. Float a candle in both vases.
Grapevine Napkin Rings
Napkin rings made with grapevines will coordinate well with the centerpiece. Cut apart any size grapevine wreath so that you can use the vines for this project and the project described in Section 4. Cut three or four vines about 6 inches long. Bend the vines together into a loop and hot glue them where they intersect each other. The loop must be large enough to slip a napkin through it. Hot glue a single silk flower and two leaves where the vines are secured. Slip the napkin through the loop.
Grapevine Place Card Holders
A place card holder can be crafted with a 2-inch terracotta pot found at your craft store or garden center. Cut a 2-inch Styrofoam ball in half and hot glue it in the pot with the dome side up. Hot-glue dried moss to cover the Styrofoam. Insert several 4-inch vines into the Styrofoam. Group them so they look similar to a little tree. Hot glue a few small silk flowers at random onto the vines. Write the person's name on a vintage-looking hang-tag and tie it onto the base of the vines.
