How to Build a Flip Out Table Top

A flip out table top can be installed in a kitchen to provide an additional eating area or preparation area depending on what is needed. A flip out table top can be designed to work in the same manner as if you were installing a wall or fold away bed. A flip out table top can be secured against a wall and then let down when it needs to be used. You can build a flip out table top by first deciding how big the table needs to be. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Measure and cut out a piece of -inch plywood to use as the table top. Glue vinyl or linoleum to the plywood to finish the surface of the table top.

    2

Secure a piece of poplar wood to the wall using screws and a power drill. Make sure you are drilling the screws into the studs on the wall. The piece of poplar will act as a cleat to secure the plywood to the wall and should be located about 34 inches from the ground.

    3

Attach the piano hinge to the underside of the plywood table top using screws and the power drill. Make sure the piano hinge is placed at the bottom of the table top.

    4

Set the table top on top of the poplar strip and secure the piano hinge using the power drill.

    5

Lay the table down so that is it supported by the hinges, and then find a stud that is close to the edge on each side of the table top.

    6

Measure up the wall on the studs six inches with a tape measure and make a mark with a pencil. You will also want to measure out from the wall six inches onto the table top and make another mark with a pencil.

    7

Drill a pilot hole where you made the marks on the wall and on the table.

    8

Insert a screw into a washer and then place the screw in the end of the chain. Place the screws in the pilot holes and use the power drill to secure them to the wall as well as the table.

    9

Fold the table up and make a mark on the wall at the center of the table.

    10

Attach a cleat to the wall on the mark you made to secure the table top when it is folded up.
