How to Raise a Table Using Pulleys

Designing a table to be raised with a pulley can be useful in a number of situations, from home use to hobby play. In small apartments or in children's rooms, a table that lifts off the floor will provide more space for residents and guests to relax or play in. Hobby areas can be also be kept neater and be more flexible with a moveable table, especially for keeping large train layouts intact and out of the way. Does this Spark an idea?

Clear away the floor area underneath where you want to suspend the table and lay down the drop cloth to catch falling particles.

Set up the ladder to give you easy access to the area of the ceiling where you want to install the metal hook that will hold the table off the floor.

Put on the safety glasses before plugging the drill into the electrical socket and carrying it up the ladder.

Attach the mechanism to a beam or a joist into the ceiling rather than straight into drywall. Place the bit against the ceiling where there is a beam or a joist and turn on the drill to create a hole to insert the eyebolt. Use a joist finder to know where the joists are located.

Screw a hook into the eyebolt and hang the pulley from it. Thread a cord through the pulley mechanism and let both ends hang down. Remember that the cord must be long enough to reach a hook on the wall. Tie hooks onto the ends of the cord.

Descend the ladder and drill holes into the corners of the table then screw in the metal hooks.

Move the ladder and the drop cloth out of the way and move the table into its place.

Tie a cord onto a hook on the corner of the table and then onto the hook on the opposite corner. Then repeat this process for the other two corners as well. Remember to leave enough slack in the cords to clear anything that will stay on the table.

Drill a hole in the wall where a joist is located and hook the free end of the cord. Then screw in the hook.

Catch the table's cords on one of the hooks hanging from the pulley. The cord should go over the pull. Then pull down on the other end of the cord until you can attach that end hook onto the hook on the wall to raise the table off the floor.
