Creating an antique look on a table can be a simple and rewarding project; imperfections in the work will add to the distressed and aged appearance in the piece. To refinish a table, you will need to remove the existing finish by sanding it off. You will then paint the table and distress it to give it an antiqued, vintage, well-worn look. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
- 1
Wipe down the table with a sponge and soapy water. This will remove dust and grime from the surface. Rinse the sponge and wipe the table again. Let it air dry.
2Go over the table with 80 grit sandpaper, following the grain of the wood. This will remove any existing polyurethane finish or old paint. Follow with a 120 grit sandpaper to smooth rough edges. Wipe the table with a tack cloth.
3Run a white candle along the edges of the table, and over any trim that juts out past the surface of the table. The wax will keep the paint from sticking to that spot, which gives it a worn look.
4Paint the table with an interior paint and a paint brush. Follow the grain of the wood and use even, overlapping strokes. Apply a thin coat of the paint and let it dry for 24 hours.
5Sand over the waxed spots with 120 grit sandpaper. Sand the surface of the table to flake off the paint until you achieve the desired amount of antiquing. Do this to the legs, as well.
