How to Recover a Plastic Table Top

How to Recover a Plastic Table Top

Plastic tables are often used outdoors. The surface of the table can become marred or damaged over time. Before you throw the plastic table out, take a good look to see if the rest of the table is in good shape. If the rest of the table is solid you can easily cover the table top and have a brand new surface for your outdoor activities. This is a good way to be green and thrifty. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Scrub the table with soap and water using a stiff scrub brush. Rinse the table clean and wipe it dry with a towel.

    2

Select a vinyl fabric suitable for outdoor use. Buy enough fabric to cover the table top and wrap to the underside of the table. Take a sample of the fabric to the paint store and select a coordinating plastic spray paint.

    3

Lightly sand the legs of the table with medium grit sandpaper. Spray paint the legs of the table with the spray paint. Hold the spray can 12 inches away from the surface and paint a light, even coat. Allow the coat to dry for 15-30 minutes before adding another coat. Apply several light coats to achieve an even and smooth appearance. Once all coats are painted, let the table dry for 24 hours.

    4

Mask off the legs with painter's tape and paper. Spray the top of the table with spray adhesive. Fold the vinyl face sides together in half and center the vinyl on the tabletop. Place the vinyl onto the table and smooth away from the center toward the edges, working out any bubbles.

    5

Turn the table upside down on a clean painter's cloth. Cut and fit the vinyl around two adjacent legs. Spray adhesive along the edge and back of the tabletop and press the cut side into the glue, making sure the edges are smooth. Repeat with each side trimming off excess vinyl as you work. Apply weights over the vinyl if it curls up while drying. Allow the glue to dry for 24 hours.
